2020

We were honored to be a part of our fifth Thought For Food (TFF) event which took place virtually on October 16, 2020. The Original summit had been planned for Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia in March 2020 but had to be cancelled as the pandemic took hold of the world.

Thought For Food (TFF) is the world’s leading platform for Next Generation Innovation and Collaboration to address global food and nutrition security. Each year the the Kirchner Food Fellowship awards a $5,000 prize to the team that the Kirchner Food Fellows judge as the most’ investment ready company’ of the 10 finalists teams.

This year, the Kirchner Food Fellows selected an innovative company based in Brazil: CBA Sementes. This pioneering team uses aeroponic control systems, machine learning, and AI, they are improving seed potato production to give farmers resources to produce and plant healthy seeds in the field, improve yield, increase incomes and tackle food security.

2019

This year we held the inaugural 2019 Mexico AgTech Competition in collaboration with Thought For Food (TFF). The organizers selected the best 12 projects after a careful selection based on over 50 applicant projects from all over Mexico. Those selected presented a 3 minute pitch during the event.

The Kirchner Food Fellowship awarded a grand prize of $5,000 to the team that the Kirchner Food Fellows judged based on the following criteria – market readiness, impact, scale, market size, and geographic relevance.

The Kirchner Food Fellows selected an innovative company called Griyum, a company that has developed a technology for the production of edible crickets with an initial focus on cricket flour. Edible crickets are one of the most sustainable protein sources. According to the FAO producing the same amount of protein from crickets than from cows would require up to 2000 times less water, while emitting 100 times less greenhouse gases.

The second prize went to “Plant Care Biotech” a project from the CINVESTAV Irapuato Research Center that use plant aromas (organic volatile compounds) to protect plants against pathogens and promotes their growth. Additionally, TFF Regional Ambasadors selected as winner of the first “TFF Ambasadors Award” the project “Bonzuriqui” from Queretaro, that use alternative indigenous grains and seeds (amaranth, pumpkin seed and beans) to produce a more nutritious multipurpose flour that can substitute wheat.

This year, the Kirchner Food Fellows selected an innovative company based in the United Kingdom: Aeropowder. This pioneering team uses treated waste feathers to make thermal shipment linings for boxes, reducing the need for polystyrene containers while providing the necessary thermal insulation for the efficient packaging and transportation of food products.

Polystyrene is almost ubiquitous in modern day food industry, appearing in virtually every step of the production chain, from its use among ingredients to the final delivery of the food. “I loved that they turn a problem into many solutions,” said Kirchner Food Fellow, Adrian Garcia-Casarrubias. “They use a food industry waste product to reduce food waste in the supply chain, all while reducing the use of polystyrene, which is polluting the sea and land all over the world.”
