Eighth Mexico cohort brings together emerging leaders in biotechnology, sustainable agriculture, and entrepreneurship
SAN MIGUEL DE ALLENDE, MX, and JACKSONVILLE, FL – August 4, 2026 — The Kirchner Impact Foundation Mexico A.C. today announced the eighth cohort (M8) of the Kirchner Fellowship Mexico Program. The three selected Fellows bring complementary expertise in biotechnology, agricultural systems, sustainability, and entrepreneurship—as well as a shared commitment to transforming scientific knowledge into meaningful impact.
The 2026–27 cohort reflects the Fellowship’s mission to develop a new generation of capital allocators capable of identifying and supporting companies addressing critical challenges in agriculture, food security, and sustainability.
The 2026–27 Kirchner Fellowship Mexico Fellows are:
Gerardo Zarza Murillo
Gerardo is a Ph.D. candidate in Biotechnology at Tecnológico de Monterrey, Campus Querétaro, where he develops mushroom-derived functional ingredients for plant-based meat alternatives while creating new value from agro-industrial residues. With experience spanning academic research, industry, and entrepreneurship programs, he is interested in identifying scientific innovations with commercial and impact potential.
“Through the Fellowship, I aim to connect science and innovation with capital and entrepreneurship, helping translate research into real-world impact,” said Gerardo.
Mariana Martínez
Mariana is pursuing a bachelor’s degree in Agricultural Biosystems Engineering at Tecnológico de Monterrey. Her interests include biotechnology, sustainability, animal health, and entrepreneurship. Through her experience in research and project management, she has focused on developing practical solutions that create value for people, animals, and agricultural communities.
“I look forward to learning from experienced investors and entrepreneurs while developing the skills to support ventures that create lasting social and environmental impact,” said Mariana.
Tania Rodríguez
Tania is pursuing a Ph.D. in Biotechnology at Tecnológico de Monterrey, Campus Querétaro. Her research combines agriculture, geospatial analytics, and plant–microbe interactions to develop decision-support models that protect cereal nutrition and soil health. She also mentors young agricultural professionals in using digital tools and translating technical knowledge into practical solutions.
“I joined the Kirchner Fellowship to learn how capital can turn scientific innovation into real-world impact. I hope to strengthen agricultural networks, advance climate-resilient ventures, and help producers feel connected, heard, and supported,” said Tania.
“Gerardo, Mariana, and Tania bring together the scientific depth, curiosity, and sense of purpose we look for in our Fellows,” said Adrián García, Lead Director of the Kirchner Fellowship Mexico Program. “Their challenge will be to evaluate innovation not only for its technical merit, but also for its ability to become a sustainable enterprise that improves lives and strengthens food and agricultural systems.”
Together, the M8 Fellows represent a growing generation of professionals capable of moving between the laboratory, the field, and the market. Their combined experience reflects the importance of connecting scientific rigor with entrepreneurial judgment and access to capital so that promising innovations can become scalable solutions.
The Kirchner Fellowship follows a distinctive “real world, real time, real money” model. Over the course of an academic year, the Fellows operate as an autonomous investment team while remaining full-time students at their respective university.
They will develop an investment mandate, source opportunities, evaluate companies, conduct due diligence, and make investment decisions focused on early-stage ventures addressing challenges across Mexico’s agriculture and food value chains. At the conclusion of the process, the team will aim to deploy capital into a high-potential company aligned with its investment thesis and the broader objective of advancing sustainable and resilient food systems.
Since launching in Mexico in 2019, the Kirchner Fellowship has trained more than 20 emerging capital allocators and evaluated hundreds of companies working in agriculture, food security, biotechnology, and sustainability. Its alumni have gone on to launch companies, participate in investment funds, lead research, work in public policy, and contribute to the growth of Mexico and Latin America’s innovation ecosystems.

The mission of the Kirchner Fellowship is to strengthen impact-investing ecosystems in regions underserved by capital markets by training and empowering a diverse new generation of investors to allocate equity investments into early-stage companies.
Through its “real world, real time, real money” model, the program has demonstrated that newly formed investment teams can become effective and responsible capital allocators within a matter of months.
