Luis Barboza Fallas

Luis is a Costa Rican biotechnology engineer with a multidisciplinary academic background that includes a Master’s in Natural Resource Management and Production Technologies, and an MBA with a concentration in Finance. He is currently pursuing a PhD in Biotechnology and Industrial Bioprocesses applied to Agrifood and the Environment at the University of Almería in Spain.

Luis is the co-founder of NovoBioLabs, an early-stage biotechnology company focused on the sustainable production of high-value compounds from genetically engineered microalgae. His leadership has positioned NovoBioLabs as a pioneer in environmentally responsible innovation within the agtech and biotech sectors. In addition to his entrepreneurial work, Luis is a professor at the Costa Rica Institute of Technology (TEC), where he teaches Project Formulation and Evaluation and Bioinformatics, supporting students in connecting scientific knowledge with practical, innovation-driven solutions.

He has secured funding from both private investors and public grants, and has contributed to the development of proprietary technologies, including a postharvest bioproduct for berry preservation, bioherbicide, and organic adjuvant developed from microalgae. With over a decade of experience in national and international projects (Portugal, Ireland, Spain, and Costa Rica), Luis blends academic rigor, technical expertise, and business acumen to advance science-driven innovation with social and environmental impact.
